The best way to put your finger on the beating pulse of the Karst and to get a taste of the life of its inhabitants is by attending one of the numerous events and festivities, or just by visiting one of the towns, as the locals will be sure to give you a warm welcome.

Alongside the numerous natural and cultural points of interest and the pearls hiding beneath the Karst surface, it has to be noted that its location makes the Karst the perfect starting point for taking a trip to either the Slovenian or Italian coast. The nearby Adriatic is an ideal opportunity for an active excursion. Just a few minutes’ drive is all it takes to get to Piran, Portorož, Koper, Izola, or Strunjan, with the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. The Italian side of the border also has numerous hidden gems, especially Sistiana, Devino and the authentic fishing village Villaggio dei Pescatori. Trips to nearby Trieste or Venice are also just a short drive away.

You can hike  The Kosovel Path or Along the trails of the Isonzo Front and take to the summits of Nanos or Snežnik. Bicycle riding across the Karst is a thrilling experience, while athletic enthusiasts have found their calling at the Karst Half-Marathon and The Runners’ Autumn Greeting

Do you like fairy tales? You can hear a fairy tale about the Karst and its people if you stop at the Pepa’s Karst Garden, located in the courtyard of the  Bunčet’s Homestead in Dutovlje

THE HISTORY OF THE KARST

You can get a sense of the history of the Karst by visiting Military Museum Tabor located in the old part of the Lokev village, not far from Lipica and the Vilenica cave, in a defense tower constructed in 1485 by the Venetians as part of the defense against the Turks.  The Military Museum Tabor is the largest private collection in Slovenia, the recipient of numerous Slovenian and international recognitions, and is even featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. The diverse collection of military equipment showcasing military events that took place on Slovenian soil, and the stories of Slovenian soldiers abroad is bound to get your heart racing

And, while you are already in Lokev, make sure to stop at the oldest prosciutto curing facility - Pršutarna Lokev, where you can see how prosciutto is made, and naturally also get a sample to taste.
